Flamingos everywhere

Updated: Jan 10

What better title than to point out the elephant (um, flamingo) in the room: this fabric is bold! I knew that this McCalls M8104 pattern, produced in partnership with Love Sewing Magazine, called for a light-medium weight fabric, and that was my original intention when I went out in search for material. But having seen this vibrant flamingo cotton, I couldn't resist and decided my version of the dress would be a little more structured with a more pronounced silhouette.

When buying the fabric, there wasn't quite as much on the bolt as required by the pattern, so I risked it knowing I might have to do a little patchwork attempt somewhere. And I was right! But thankfully the only place I needed to use a different fabric was for the facing of the band which snakes around the front of the dress, and can't be seen. The stiff fabric also meant that the sleeves stuck out a little too much, so a pinch and stitch method to flatten it a little seemed to work well.

A touch of extra drama with the re-purposed gold buttons down the front and voilà - it was ready in time for a lunch outing I had in the diary!
