Fun Fabric Scissors Bag

Updated: Oct 3, 2020

Do you ever find your numerous pairs of paper/fabric scissors end up left in different places? Aside from my embroidery scissors, I have 4 large tools (paper scissors; fabric scissors; pinking shears and a rotary cutter), and have wanted to keep them in one bag or container for ages. So this is the result! I found a lot of drawstring bag making ideas online, so combined a few together and added a lining. And of course, chose a very sweet fabric:

1. I chose two fun fabrics, both fat quarters, which vaguely complemented each other as there was a little orange in the outside fabric.

2. Then positioned my scissors on the bottom of the fabric, keeping gaps around each side for seam allowance, to see where they would sit once inside. I cut off the top, thinking how much fabric would be needed above the scissors to make the drawstring work effectively.

3. I cut out the fabric needed (2 pieces of outer fabric, the size as seen in picture 3), and sewed around the side and bottom edges with a 1cm seam allowance, leaving a 5cm gap at the top on either side.

4. Then folded over the top by 1cm and sewed across.

5. Unfortunately it's not clear to see here, but I then sewed down the sides from the top, leaving a gap which will become the gap for the drawstring channel. I actually redid this later on, as the gap was too small. So I would recommend leaving a bigger gap of several centimetres.

6. I then cut the same size fabric out for the lining, then reduced the top edge by a couple of centimetres. Then the side and bottom edges were sewn all the way around.

7. Placing wrong sides together with the lining inside, I positioned the lining so that the top sat just under the folded over edge of the outside fabric, and folded them both over by a couple of centimetres. I made sure that the seam allowances down the sides were folded open, otherwise the drawstring will not easily move around the channels.

8. For the final bit of sewing, I stitched around the bottom of the folded over top (which was a little tricky!).

9. I used two ribbons for the drawstring, which are threaded one by one in one side and round the whole channel before coming out the same side, using a safety pin to nudge it round.
