Get the Creative Juices Flowing!

Updated: Oct 2, 2020

I think one of my favourite things about crafts, and sewing in particular, is how many different things you can do and the variety of results you can achieve! I used to (and let’s be real, I still kinda am) someone who has an idea and wants to see it through, end of story. But experimenting within your chosen craft, especially when it’s a hobby, allows you to see what beautiful things you can achieve that you never thought of trying before, and open your eyes to what other creative joys there are out there. I’m not necessarily talking creating a Lady Gaga gown, although if that’s your jam then by all means! But rather on a smaller scale, as you’ll see below.

Admittedly these were created as little experimentations as part of my fashion design course, but I wanted to share them in any case. They are by no means one of the seven wonders of the world, and are certainly nothing new, but they were fun to try out and were things I hadn’t really branched out into before:

3D fabric manipulation:

This was definitely satisfying once finished! A very simple technique, but just requires a little patience. Lots of rows of pintucks are sewn, and the fabric is then turned 90 degrees, and a line of stitching sewn in alternate directions at regular intervals.

Star beading:

I love watching a good couture beading/sequin video, so I suppose this is a little more down to earth. These various star shapes were created using a two bead backstitch.

Golden embroidery:

Now this one surprised me at how fancy it turned out! It’s a variety of straight and split stitches. Hopefully after some more work it’s going to become an intricate feathered design. We’ll ignore the fact that the gold embroidery thread strands took me a solid 15 minutes to thread through a needle...

So the next time you pass a haberdashery or a craft shop and spot something you’re not entirely sure what it’s for, take a nosey inside and see what you can experiment with. You might find your new favourite hobby!
