It was a few years ago when I was first inspired by brown paper tied up with string, as it were, for Christmas gift wrapping. It’s amazing how something so simple and seemingly old fashioned can actually look stunning and very effective. If I had more time, I would have liked to add some sprigs of holly or pine cones maybe to the design, but here I chose simplicity (and I seem to have an abundance of red ribbon that I’ve saved from past Christmas’s!).
I may not be the world's greatest eco-warrior, but the idea of a sustainable Christmas is rather satisfying - brown paper and doilies to be recycled, the red ribbon returned to me for the future and little reindeer faces which can easily be used again on Christmas cards etc.
What surprised me was actually how hard it was to find brown paper in shops! I eventually found a decent size roll in WHSmith, and although it was quite a challenge to keep it crease free when wrapping as it’s thicker than regular paper, there’s so much more you can do with it. I originally had in mind to spray paint some gold reindeer around the packages, but I felt that less was more in this case. The doilies came from the kitchen cupboard, and the little reindeer faces were retrieved from past gift tags.
So if you haven’t got round to wrapping your Christmas presents yet, why not consider being creative with brown paper and some festive materials that you may already have around the house. Happy wrapping!
