Halter-Neck Summer Bodice

Updated: Oct 1, 2020

In a world which is full of fashion in every design and cut, it seems almost impossible to create anything that is truly unique anymore. The same could be said for all arts, but I personally think it’s rather exciting trying to find that niche that hasn’t been widely explored.

Having said that, I’m sure this particular design has already been exploited in many shapes and forms. But it was still created from scratch without a pattern, so I think that means I’m allowed to put my stamp on it! I was very keen to create something that was a bit ‘out-there’ for me, as I have a tendency to dress within the confines of classy and chic.

Ignoring the flashing warning light in the back of my mind, I chose a plunging V-neck bodice with a completely open back. Would the end result be entirely appropriate and well-fitted? Who knows, but what’s life without doing a bit of experimentation and side-stepping into the unknown?

I suppose having a mannequin my size would have simplified the process, but working without one, I opted for the method of pinning the material to an old T-shirt whilst wearing it. I cut out the front piece in the shape of two large triangles, and another the same as the ‘lining’. Then I cut out a wide strip that I would fold over to create the band at the bottom, and eventually sew two poppers on.

Creating the perfect shape for the bodice took quite a bit of trial and error, but eventually I was able to sew it together with the band across the bottom. After I produced two relatively thin strips for the tie behind the neck, I sewed them to the tops of the triangles, allowing for some puckering so that it didn’t lie flat. I also decided to add in bra cups so it could be worn without fear of any unfortunate situations…

I did hit a drawback at this point, whereby the bodice really was a bit too revealing for my somewhat modest taste. But I simply sewed the V-shape closed a few centimetres from the bottom, and my satisfaction was restored.

So, definitely something to be worn on hotter days and perhaps not to a formal event for risk of accidentally leaning over too far… But I would encourage getting some material you can see yourself wearing, and get some pins and thread out! Whether you feel inspired by the summer bodice or just want to have a go at conjuring up something of your own – take the plunge.
