The Barbie 2023 film hype was quite something to behold, and I of course jumped on the bandwagon in the lead up to the film's release! I loved seeing all of Barbie's outfits appearing in press releases and clips from the film, and I felt a strong need to re-create Margot Robbie's pink chequered 50's style dress. It seems to have worked out, as a couple of friends who had seen my dress before the film called it Katie's dress whilst watching it!
Having done a few re-creations of dresses from film and television already, I felt fairly confident that this wouldn't be too difficult as it's not an overly complicated design. I purchased the fabric from Empress Mills, and sketched out a pattern based off my basic bodice block I already have in my size. It was great being able to use the pattern of the fabric to make sure I was cutting in straight lines where required, particularly when cutting out the skirt which was a large rectangle. I differed slightly from the original design by omitting the belt and I pressed the skirt pleats a little differently, but otherwise it's fairly close. A little lighter pink would have been the cherry on the cake!
