Mothering Sunday Flowers

Updated: Oct 1, 2020

It’s soon coming up to Mothering Sunday/Mother’s Day in the UK, and I was totally inspired by an Instagram post by @mamma_who_makes with her pom-pom flowers. They look like such a fun and creative alternative (and longer-lasting!) to fresh flowers. As much as I know my mum would love to receive the real thing, these seem like an easy and cheerful gift.

I’m sure you’ll find many pom-pom tutorials online, but I have provided a step-by-step here. It’s admittedly been a long time since I’ve wound some woolly pom-poms, so I had to remind myself and experiment a bit! But they are very satisfying to make, and you could choose all sorts of colours. I liked the idea of mixing colours (by changing the wool every so often when winding round the card), but chose three that go together and made one small and one slightly larger of each.

I found some handy thin sticks to use as ‘stems’ (I might have stolen them from my mum’s flower arranging cupboard…), and popped them in a jar that already had some silver stones in the bottom and a silver ribbon to go round the middle.

These will brighten up any room, and who says a sneaky bit of perfume to give of a faux-flowery scent means they’re any less charming than the real thing…?
