Stripy Top and Dress Transformation

Updated: Oct 1, 2020

I DO love it when a plan falls into place, particularly when it involves two garments you have had lying around waiting to be altered in some way, which are transformed into something very wearable and charming. I had this stripy leotard buried in my sewing bag for several months as I found it quite constricting, despite loving the appearance.

I knew it was destined to have the lower part removed at some point to become a crop top of some sort, so pairing it next to a white crepe bandeau summer dress gave me the inspiration I needed. I cut off the lower half of the leotard first, making sure to keep the scraps for future use and the poppers (see my previous post for how to have fun with material scraps!). I also removed the waist straps from the dress so they were out of the way.

It was then a case of folding over the dress at the elasticated waistline and quarter pinning it to the ‘hem’ of the top, and then pinning round the rest. It’s a shame that due to the quality of the top, the black lines didn’t match up on the front and back. But I chose to keep the front neat and hope the back is less noticeable!

Using a zigzag stitch on the sewing machine, I sewed the pieces together, making sure to stretch the elastic as I went. Ta da! A quick transformation and a really fun summer dress.
