The Autumnal Dress

Updated: Feb 6

My first dress drafted from scratch - complete! Having decided to take on this project in spare moments several months ago, I'm very happy to have finished it to the standard I hoped. My grandma was throwing out a satin skirt and asked if I wanted it for the material, and yes I certainly did! I envisioned a simple, lined shift dress for formal occasions. One day I would love to release the pattern so you can all have a go, as it's certainly a satisfying finish. Who needs to go dress shopping when you can make something you want to wear (with just a few too many hours stressing at the sewing machine....)?

After sewing the pieces together, leaving the back and hem unfinished, it took quite a bit of trial and error to get the fitting right. I had the original zip from the skirt to use, but originally positioned it too far up and certainly couldn't squeeze into that. So I moved it further down and sewed in four hooks and eyes at the top instead. The final step was to sew in my label!
