The Circular Skirt

Updated: Oct 1, 2020

We all remember the school years of being embarrassed by wearing long skirts (well, perhaps not the older generations!) and desperately trying to roll up any that were dangerously close to our knees. But I love how trends have changed and longer skirts are most definitely ‘in’, particularly flowing fabrics. The circular skirt, which can of course come in many lengths and materials, seems to me to be a happy middle ground and a summer favourite.

You will notice that this skirt is of the same fabric as my previous summer bodice (I don’t believe it’s a crime, so why not), which is the perfect picnic or summer garden party attire. I personally love wearing it with a plain black top to attract all the attention to the skirt, and it also works very well on a slightly cooler day with a long sleeved top as well.

Another reason why I chose to talk about this style of skirt is because it is honestly one of the easiest to make! There’s no prize (sadly) for guessing how it’s made – a large circle is cut out of the fabric, with a hole in the middle and a waistband attached. I chose to have a long zip running down the side (yes you can quite easily see my slightly rushed zip attachment there!), and no lining so it felt light on warmer days.

You can’t often go wrong with a 50’s vibe, so I would love at a future point to also make a longer patterned circular skirt with maybe a stiffer material to help it stand out. But that’s the beauty of the circular skirt – it’s simple, and the length is completely up to you. Happy sewing!
