#WhyIMake - Katherine Eleanor Unwrapped

Updated: Oct 4, 2020

Let’s be real, I probably spend more time drooling over other people’s spectacular makes, particularly when it comes to receiving the new Mollie Makes magazine in the post each month, or browsing LoveCrafts. Who can resist those pages full of creative eye candy! So, why do I make?

1. I have always chosen imagination and crafts over anything else. I can pinpoint it back to when my grandpa would spend time with me painting, writing a story together, baking with my grandma as well. I'm very grateful for those early years, as it made me who I am today! Someone who always hungers for more craft projects, whether they're achievable or completely impractical...

2. I love the spark of an idea, then working out how to make that come to life. Admittedly that can lead to frustration which may be taken out on the project itself (guilty!), but it's more often a thrill to see through a project and stand back at the end to see what you've managed to create. All from a moment of inspiration!

3. It can be a wonderful method of escapism - crafting can become a complete distraction to your daily life of worries and concerns (particularly if you couple it with a Netflix programme! Bit of therapeutic embroidery and your favourite programme is good for the soul!).

4. It’s an escape from those screens! We all hear it enough these days, but it’s a refreshing relief to have your eyes roaming over different fabrics or bits and pieces from my overflowing craft bag for card making. After spending the weekdays in an office, your eyes need a little TLC.

5. Transforming things you already have into something new has SO many benefits: - It requires you to imagine objects/garments as something else and gets those brain cells ticking

- You can make something wearable/useable that previously might not have been

- You can save money from getting something new

- You’re doing your little bit towards the planet by saving on buying new materials

I’ve done several clothing transformations on my website - give those a look!

6. And on the occasion (she says boldly), the compliments on your new hand-sewn dress/knitted hat/handcrafted birthday card are always a bonus! I loved the oohs and aahs over the beautifully fun Tilly and the Buttons flowery jumpsuit I made this summer (see below). Hopefully one day I’ll have a wardrobe full of my own handmade clothes of both other peoples patterns and my own designs.

Here are a few of my favourite things I’ve made that feature on my website:
